Winter may be a sleepy time in the garden; but soon enough, the garden will be flourishing again with fresh blooms, fruits and vegetables.
And, deer are ready for them - all of them. White-tailed deer are a year-round problem for gardeners; and they are willing to taste-test everything from home gardens. Of course, they have their favorites (corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, oats); but they will not turn their noses away from most organic goods.
But, deer aren't the only concern for growers. Bear hibernation can end as early as February, although March and April is expected. Once "awake," bears will be hungry for plant-based foods again; and they will approach landscapes more often than in Fall and Winter.
Coyote breeding season begins in January; and growers may begin to see coyote pups in March. This is not just a crop protection concern; but a health concern for pets and children. Coyotes are known to carry rabies; and they are quite aggressive. If pet owners and homeowners aren't careful, then a coyote attack may occur in the yard on pets and kids. (We really aren't trying to scare you.)
These winter wildlife are a concern moving into the spring season; but can be deterred by building yard fence. The idea is to keep them away from plants, children and pets and allow them wander elsewhere for food.
