Why Care About Bees?

by Jennifer Smith February 11, 2019

In North America, bees are the major pollinators. What's sad is that bee colonies are dying and are experiencing a loss in habitat due to climate change; wildlife; pests and diseases.

There are over 855 native species of bees in Canada that help pollinate over 1/3 of the world's foods. Without pollination, and the help from bees, hummingbirds, monarch butterflies and 1000 other species of pollinating animals, we would not have the best-tasting fruits and vegetables to eat on a daily basis.

Bees and other pollinators are losing pollinating flowers because of browsing deer and other wildlife such as bears that are also looking for food. Gardeners need to keep wildlife away from pollinating plants that help bees; and in turn, help us.

To keep wildlife away from landscapes, growers need to install garden fencing and plant deer-resistant flowers
