Which Pet Rules In Canadian Household?

by Jennifer Smith April 19, 2019

It doesn't matter if you prefer dogs over cats; animal lovers can all agree that the gentle face of a puppy or kitten melts hearts. But, to make things interesting, we checked out the numbers to see which type of pet Canadians prefer based on recent statistics. Here's what we discovered:

In 2016, it was estimated that there were approximately 7.9 million cats and 5.9 million dogs in Canada...and approximately 35% of Canadian households had a dog, while 38% had a cat. Last year in 2018, there was an increase of 8.3 million cats in households compared to 8.2 million dogs. Statistically, 41 percent of households have at least one dog compared to 38 percent which own cats.

So, does that mean Canadian pet owners prefer dogs despite the high number of cats in Canada? Or, is cat ownership trending up?

Let's face it: there are more cats than dogs in North America - possibly because of breeding throughout the year. In the United States, there are 86 million owned cats compared to 78 owned dogs. However, funny enough, 39% of American households own a dog compared to 33% of American households with cats.
