What To Grow In Winter

by Jennifer Smith December 13, 2018

Don't let the snow on the ground stop you from gardening or farming! The job of a grower never ends; and they'll tell you that some plants are resistant to cold climates and can handle the frigid conditions quite well.

When we think of cool-weather crops, we think of herbs and vegetables that can be used in soups or salads. Here are a list of things to grow all winter long:

  • Leek
  • Kale, Lettuce, Spinach
  • Carrots
  • Parsnips
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Beets
  • artichoke

"Varieties of peas, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, potatoes and types of brasiccas all do well in winter when fastidiously maintained," says master gardener Brian Minter.

Don't give up on your garden just because of the snow. Change the way you grow plants in winter. Remember, warmth is critical and plants may need to be covered with blankets.

Happy winter gardening!
