Warm Weather Means Ticks

by Jennifer Smith April 30, 2018

Now that the warm weather is here to stay, Canadian residents are noticing an influx of ticks on home properties, hiking trails and jogging paths. Tick are most active in the spring and summer months while the weather is above freezing. This is a problem for outdoor enthusiasts including hikers, campers, and gardeners who want to take advantage of the warm weather.

It is recommended by the CDC to be on the look out for deer ticks this season. Wear bright colors while outside for long periods of time to easily spot a tick and wear tick repellent and bug spray to keep ticks at bay.

Gardeners s can protect themselves and their pets from the spread of ticks by fencing out deer from properties. When deer walk onto lawns, they drop ticks in the grass and put us at risk for tick diseases including Lyme Disease. To rid deer from landscapes, gardeners need to install a 7.5-8' foot high deer fence

For pet owners, it's advised to check pets for ticks through regular grooming. If dogs have ticks on them, then remove the tick and have the pet tested for Lyme Disease. There are vaccines to help improve animal health, should need be.

Warm weather is great news for everyone, but even more for tick species looking for their next blood meal. Use caution and preventative tick disease methods at home.
