Vancouver Island Resident Charged By Deer In Backyard

by Jennifer Smith September 05, 2018

An Oak Bay woman was left with minor injuries on Monday after a deer herd charged her in her own backyard. Police felt that the deer stomped on the woman because she posed as a potential threat to a young fawn that was standing on the property.

Police advise homeowners to take caution and keep a safe distance away from wildlife to avoid encounters. If deer often appear on properties, it's best to build deer fence around yards to keep them off landscapes. The District of Oak Bay partnered with the Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society just under two years ago to work on a birth control project for doe to reduce the population by half over the next five years.

Deer fencing is the most effective means for deer control and should be considered not just for safety measures but also for tick disease control and plant protection.
