There are 40 tick species in Canada that are causing mischief in nearly all parts of Canada. While not all ticks carry Lyme Disease, or diseases, at all, some carry tick infections that may not be completely understood or mentioned.
Ticks, such as the Eastern Black-legged Tick, are found in Ontario but are rare in Saskatchewan. However, Saskatchewan has its own problems with American Dog Ticks that do not carry Lyme, but do carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Other ticks, like the Lone Star Tick, carry sudden red meat allergies and other tick-borne illnesses.
Tick movement has become a national problem in Canada as ticks are found all across Canada in these regions:
1) Southern British Columbia
2) Southeastern and South-central Manitoba
3) Southern Quebec
4) Southern, Eastern and Western Ontario
5) Parts of Nova Scotia
6) Southern New Brunswick and Grand Manan Island
Tick bites happen most in the spring and summer seasons as the months change from cool to warm. The more deer seen in Canada is thought to be because of climate change, and deer moving northbound to escape the hot weather. This action from the States, in turn, caused health concerns for Canadian residents.
To protect family members and pets from the spread of ticks, tick prevention is essential at home. If homeowners can keep deer off landscapes, then they will reduce the chance of a tick bite by 97 percent.
