Teach Youth About Agriculture!

by Jenn Smith April 27, 2020

Asking children about where food comes from will offer answers that put smiles on our faces. While innocent, they believe that our produce comes from grocery store and are blown away when we tell them our food starts at the ground level. Here's why teaching kids about agriculture at an early age can benefit them as they grow:

For starters, kids will learn how our food goes from ground to plate. By gardening with children, they will see the growing process in full bloom and how to manage gardening sites through watering, shoveling and pulling weeds (aka as blood, sweat and tears). Additionally, they will learn responsibility and how to care for land. They make even get to make homemade pizzas from tomatoes they grow at home!

As children age into high school level and college students, they may decide to major in agriculture and intern at botanical gardens; garden nurseries; or urban farms to help cultivate the land and become gardeners and farmers one day. They may learn how to use farming equipment, pest and wildlife management strategies and how to process food. They can study plant hybrids; seeds and ways to create new plants, too.

There are many benefits to teaching kids about agriculture and where our food comes from. Starting a home garden or small-scale farm will help them grow more than just plants as they age.
