Starting a Backyard Garden? Read This First.

by Jenn Smith April 17, 2020

Growing your own food is a rewarding experience that can provide families of four with months worth of fresh produce. However, beginning gardeners may get too excited about the types of fruits and vegetables that they will soon have that they plant too much too soon. Here are a few tips for starting an organic garden at home.

  • It's tempting to buy every type of fruit and vegetable you enjoy; but don't go crazy buying up the store. Starting small is key.
  • Space plants accordingly. You know how how we are performing social distancing? Keep that in mind with plants. They need their space to soak up nutrients and grow strong root systems.
  • Invest in a good pair of gardening gloves; shears; shovels and other essential gardening tools. Don't skimp on price!
  • Don't forget about deer management strategies including deer fencing and growing plants for deer-resistance. Keeping deer away from gardens is critical.
  • Start with great soil.
  • Learn your frost dates and how you plan to cover crops during cool months.
  • Don't forget to feed plants fresh water early in the morning. Do not over-or-under water plants!

Growing food is fun for the whole family and will teach kids where food comes from. It offers opportunities to learn a new skill and eat fresh organic foods free from pesticides and chemicals.
