Start a TNR Program For Feral Cats

by Jennifer Smith April 12, 2018

There are over 10 million homeless cats in Canada; and cat lovers may want to take home all of the cats to help them. However, feral cats are not like domestic cats. They have never had families; they can be aggressive; and they are loners.

Starting a feral cat assistance program in your community requires work, time, compassion and a bit of money. But, the positive outcome outweighs the cost. Starting a TNR Program will give cats medical care and help them get acquainted with people for possible adoption purposes. (Feral cats are not in any position to be adopted.)

First, it's best to get a group of volunteers to help you collect the stray cats off the streets. Volunteers will need a place to put the cats during the time being; and this is where outdoor cat enclosures comes into play. Unlike cages, having a cat fence available will make the cat feel at home (in the outdoors) but will provide them with security and socialization.

Cats will require basic needs such as:

  • Shelter (a warm, dry place away from car fumes, wildlife and other things that may harm them).
  • Fresh water and nutritious cat food.
  • Socialization with other cats and animals.
  • An outdoor cat enclosure for exercise (cats need a minimum of 30 minutes of daily activity and fresh air).
  • Love!

Starting a cat foster program or Trap-Neuter-Release Program is the best method to care for homeless cats. It's humane; easy to start; and beneficial for all cat breeds.
