The government of the Yukon territory is offering free land in the northwestern region to individuals who are willing to farm the land.

Of course, there are certain guidelines that individuals will need to take in order to receive 160 acres of free land in the Yukon. For starters, Canadian farmers are required to reside in the Yukon Area for at least one year prior to the deal. Growers will also need to prove that they will contribute to the agricultural economy and will need to pay for surveying.

The government has already given away nearly 8000 acres of farmland in the past decade to those willing to farm outside of Alaska. The program has been active since 1982 and gives approximately 10 parcels of free land per year to Canadian residents.

Global warming has played a significant role in the area as the territory gets wetter and warmer.

"We may see opportunity with an increased growing season," said Rob Jacob, a government official with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the capital Whitehorse. "A number of programs help farmers to become more resilient to climate change, including funding to increase access to water for irrigation or to have better water efficiency," Jacob said. The region offers limited agriculture - only that of hay, vegetables and meat; however, the program may help build the economy.
