Prevent Groundhog Damage In Gardens

by Jennifer Smith September 14, 2018

Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, are the second most complained about garden pest after rabbits.

Groundhogs are stocky moving animals that cause damage to gardens by chewing, digging and burrowing. (They are not big jumpers.) To prevent woodchuck damage in gardens, gardeners are encouraged to install steel fence around vegetable gardens - preferably with PVC coating. The PVC will add a secondary layer of protection from chew marks caused by bunnies, rabbits and groundhogs.

Gardeners will need to trench the fence into the ground 12-24 inches for best results and hold down the fence with ground stakes.

For garden protection against woodchucks, choose a steel fence with PVC.
