Plants To Grow In Winter

by Jenn Smith November 19, 2019

Don't give up gardening just because of chilly temperatures and a little snow - well, okay, a lot of snow. There are plenty of edible plants to grow in wintertime for home gardeners to enjoy. Here are plants to grow this winter:

Garlic, leeks, onions, radishes, lettuce, peas, potatoes, chard, spinach, rhubarb, and other leafy greens such as bok choy and kale can all be grown in backyard gardens in winter. However, deer will be ready to pounce on these plants the minute gardeners step away from growers; so, it is best to implement deer management strategies before planting begins. Some deer control techniques to consider include:

  • Installing a 7.5 to 8' foot high deer fence around lawns and gardens to reduce the amount of deer on landscapes;
  • Growing garlic and other deer-resistant plants to keep away deer;
  • Adding rocks around gardens (a rock garden). Deer have trouble walking on the stones.
  • Sprinkling deer repellents and predatory urine on grass to create the illusion coyotes and wolves are nearby.

Deer are desperate to find food in the wintertime; and they will search around home gardens prior to eating leaves, twigs, tree bark and nuts.
