Montreal's Coyote Management Plan: Scarring Them?

by Jennifer Smith December 11, 2018

The city of Montreal has a new coyote management plan set to keep coyotes away from humans. The measurement does not involve culling coyotes down right; rather scarring them first.

The "hazing campaign" promotes the cohabitation of urban coyotes. The plan will only kill coyotes that appear too aggressive toward humans. There have been 19 people bitten by coyotes since June 2017.

"When coyotes bite, said Thuillier, it's a sign they don't fear humans and associate people with food. These are two factors, she explained, that the city wants to take out of the equation." (CBC)

This is the most extensive plan the city has done for coyote control, costing $150,000 for the scare campaign.

The next step is to train employees to scare coyotes.

For homeowners looking to rid coyotes from yards, install a 6 foot high steel fence. While coyotes rarely attack humans, they will encounter pets, if they get a taste for meat.
