Ticks are most active in the warm months, beginning in March and running through May. As we know, ticks attach themselves to warm-blooded hosts for survival; and they can spread Lyme Disease to humans, livestock and domestic pets, along with other tick-borne illnesses. Black-legged ticks, the most common tick species, is found in wooded areas and backyards. The black-legged tick population is creeping into Canada, most reported in Toronto as well as the Hamilton-Wentworth region of Ontario.
Reported Lyme Disease cases among humans have only increased in recent years, beginning with 258 cases in 2011 and leaping to 682 cases in 2013. The current problem is that patients are being misdiagnosed for Lyme Disease, as the symptoms often reflect that of the common flu. Some symptoms may not show for several weeks or months.
To protect yourself from the possible risk of Lyme Disease, it is suggested that outdoor enthusiasts and gardeners perform a thorough tick-check after extended periods of outdoor activity.
