Lyme Disease Prevention In Dogs Month

by Jennifer Smith April 03, 2018

This year alone, there have been 351 reported cases of Lyme Disease in dogs in Canada out of over 6000 dogs tested for the diseases. Because dogs can get Lyme Disease, it's important for pet owners to know how to remove a tick and how to protect pets from the spread of the disease.

This Lyme Disease Prevention Month, we encourage dog owners to do the following to prevent tick diseases:Lyme Disease can develop weeks or months after a tick bite and last for 2-5 weeks in dogs. Although there is a vaccine for dogs with Lyme, the medication is not complete protection. Lyme Disease in dogs is not fatal but can lead to kidney disease which is.

  • Applying tick repellents to yards
  • Using dog tick shampoos after outdoor activity
  • Building a pet fence to keep out wildlife that may carry ticks
  • Remove ticks with tick tweezers
  • Always groom dogs after outside playtime

Tick activity is at its highest in spring; and pet owners need to take the preventative measures to protect dogs from tick diseases. Keep out wildlife that may be carrying ticks and reduce the odds of dogs obtaining diseases.
