January Begins Coyote Breeding Season

by Jennifer Smith January 08, 2019

Coyotes are abundant across Canada; and are discovered in almost every Canadian territory including British Columbia, Yukon and western NWT, Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and east to the Maritimes.

Deer mating season just ended in North America; and homeowners will soon see more deer populations on lawns and gardens; however, homeowners will also need to worry about the influx of coyotes that will soon invade home properties in spring.

Coyote breeding season begins in late December (early January) until March when coyote pups are born in March and April. While coyotes generally do not attack humans, they pose a threat to small pets - both dogs and cats. They will also eat in home gardens especially if they see fruits and berries.

For coyote management this winter and spring, homeowners are advised to build a steel fence with PVC-coating that is at least 6 feet high. To combat the deer herd invasion that will sprout at the end of winter into spring, homeowners may consider building a 7.5 feet high metal deer fence.

Winter is all about deer and coyote control on landscapes. It's time to consider installing wildlife fence
