It's World Wildlife Conservation Day!

by Jennifer Smith December 04, 2018

December 4th is declared to be World Wildlife Conservation Day; and it's time for us all to talk about the decline in wildlife populations around the world.

Here are some numbers according from Earth Day:

  • The number of animals living on the land has fallen by 40% since 1970.
  • Marine animal populations have also fallen by 40% overall.
  • Overall, 40 percent of the world’s 11,000 bird species are in decline.
  • Animal populations in freshwater ecosystems have plummeted by 75% since 1970.
  • Insect populations have declined by between 60 and 75% in some places of the world.
  • About a quarter of the world’s coral reefs have already been damaged beyond repair, and 75 percent of the world’s coral reefs are at risk from local and global stresses.
  • It is estimated that humans have modified >50% of Earth’s land surface, which has affected many ecosystems as well as the range in which specific species of wildlife used to exist.

There are many factors causing the destruction around the world including habitat destruction and climate change.

To get involved this Wildlife Conservation Day, animal lovers can volunteer at wildlife sanctuaries to work with cub bears, fawns, big cats and more.

Deer and fawn rescue groups can receive additional discounts on deer fencing this week in lieu of World Wildlife Conservation Day! Contact DeerbustersCanada today to learn more.
