It's Rodent Awareness Week

by Jennifer Smith October 24, 2016

Rodents cause millions of dollars in annual agricultural damage to crops and farmland. In addition, these small critters carry over 60 transmissible diseases to humans, companion animals and livestock.

As you can see, rodents are not well-liked in the farming and gardening industry. Nor are they fans of homeowners.

Designated by the National Pest Management Association, Rodent Awareness Week is a call to homeowners for them to become aware of the damage caused by rodents entering homes and gardens.

“Although rodents are a year-round problem, we do find that consumers report an uptick in rodent infestations occurring in the fall and winter months,” PPMA Executive Director Cindy Mannes says in a news release. “In fact, rodents invade about 21 million homes in the U.S. each winter, making them one of the most common pests."

There are several rodent protection tactics that you can reinforce including:

  • Physically removing them by some means;
  • Taking away their source(s) of food [in-and-around gardens];
  • Using rodent repellents inside the home and your outside garden;
  • Regulatory Control/Pest Extermination Measures
Although October 23-29, 2016 is Rodent Awareness Week, DeerbustersCanada.ca recommends deer fencing with rodent protection to protect gardens and property lines year-round. Contact Deerbusters Canada to find the right rodent control solution for your home.
