How Long Should Pets Be Outside In Winter?

by Jenn Smith January 06, 2020

Winter is a challenging season for pet owners. We want our pets to go outside to breathe fresh air and play; but we know that if they are left out too long they will risk health complications, such as hypothermia, and water damage to their foot pads.

Generally, pets require 30 minutes of daily activity to stay lean; but in winter, the rules change due to harsh climates. Instead of a half hour of exercise, dogs and cats should stay outside for 15-20 minutes. Larger dogs may be able to stay outside longer; but regardless of size, pet owners will need to pay attention to how each dogs tolerates the cold.

After time spent outside in the snow, pet owners are advised to wipe off dog paws and bodies with dry towels and offer dogs fresh water to drink. Hydration and warmth are key to staying healthy this season.
