Give a Cheer, Spring is Here!

by Jennifer Smith March 20, 2018

Today, Tuesday March 20, 2018, is the first day of Spring; and as Americans celebrate National Ag Day, Canadian gardeners are gearing up for the new growing season. There are so many wonderful vegetables to enjoy eating this spring including:

Mushrooms: Rich in Vitamin B and D vitamins, morsel mushrooms contain antioxidants that will help people stay fit. Available April-June across Canada.

Asparagus: This super food is available from March-June in Western Canada and May-June in Central/Atlantic Canada.

Avocado: Growing avocados is tricky in Canada because the avocado plants cannot tolerate Canada's extremely cold climate. Although frost tolerant, they need to keep extra warm in the winter time in order to have spring consumption.

Celery: March is the best time to plant celery in undercover trays in Zone 4a and can be done in 4-6 weeks. The soil temperature will need to be between 54°F and 70°F to successfully grow the plant.

Artichoke: It's best to grow artichoke plants in February or March in undercover trays across Zone 7a. Soil temperatures will need to be between 59°F and 64°F across Canada.

Spring is the best time of the year to enjoy earthy vegetables including kale and spinach while planting salad vegetables.
