Facts About Wood Bison

by Jennifer Smith April 09, 2018

Known for their shaggy brown coats, and thunderous physique, bison (or mountain buffalo) have sadly made the Canadian threatened species list. This being Canada's National Wildlife Week, DeerbustersCanada wants to share information about the wood bison and how you can help protect them throughout Canada.

Mountain bison are found in Alaska and parts of Canada including the Northwest territories: Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. Two centuries ago, bison were found in the millions; but hunting devastated the bison population, lowering the population of wood bison to only 11,000 herb members!

In North America, wood bison have been held captive and treated for diseases including Brucellisis and Tuberculosis. Wildlife conservation agencies have transferred over 200 bison to national parks for wildlife protection and health care, then reintroduced them to their natural habitats.

It's time to protect buffalo and other threatened/endangered species. Work with DeerbustersCanada for the love of wildlife.
