Lyme Disease is the most common tick-borne illness affecting both pet owner and pet. Many pet owners are surprised to learn that dogs can get Lyme Disease and feel the effects of the disease just like their owners. Although Lyme Disease symptoms in dogs only last for a few weeks with antibiotics, the threat of tick bites is always a concern for pet owners planning to go on hiking and camping trips with dogs this spring.
It's hard to say why tick diseases are worse in the States than in Canada; but it will be curious to see if ticks will migrate to Canada. With five deer species living in Canada, it seems possible that this could happen sooner than we think. Lyme Disease in dogs is not as bad in Canada as in the States. In 2017, 3943 dogs in Canada tested positively for Lyme Disease in contrast to almost 303,000 U.S. dogs. This year alone, there have been 179 positive cases of Lyme Disease in Canadian dogs as opposed to over 22,000 in the States (count your blessings, Canada).
The best method for getting rid of ticks is to stop the deer that are tracking the ticks into properties. Choose a 7.5' or 8' deer fence or a dog fence to protect dogs from the inside; and keep out wildlife.
