Dog Tick Diseases

by Jennifer Smith April 11, 2018

Being that April is Lyme Disease Prevention In Dogs Month, we feel that it is important to note that dogs can also fall victim to other pet tick diseases. Not all ticks carry Lyme Disease; such as the Lone Star Ticks that carries other tick diseases instead of Lyme.

The American Dog Tick gets its name for choosing dogs as their primary hosts; and they are active in carrying Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever among other illnesses. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can be transmitted from a dog tick, lone star tick, and wood tick.

Ehrlichiosis in canines can result in depression, runny nose, fever, loss of appetite and weight loss. Caused by the Brown Dog Tick, which is also responsible for Babesiosis leading to anemia, weakness and vomiting.

As with any tick diseases, the best form of treatment is early detection. Take dogs to a veterinarian near you and have them tested for Lyme Disease. After daily activity, groom pets for ticks and remove a tick as soon as it is spotted on the dog.
