Recreational marijuana was legalized in 2018 throughout Canada; and marijuana smokers rejoiced..but their pets, not so much. Both dogs and cats that are exposed to the secondhand smoke from weed can become very ill. Here is what pet owners need to know about puffing weed in the faces of dogs and cats.
When dogs inhale marijuana, or eat a pot brownie, they can be exposed to the same effects as people. "Veterinarian Benjamin A. Otten of allCREATURES veterinary clinic in El Cerrito, Calif., says he looks for these telltale symptoms when identifying "marijuana toxicity" in a dog:" (NPR)
In cats, effects from inhaled pot smoke can include dilated pupils, low blood pressure, uncoordinated movements and sleepiness or excitation. However, symptoms of high cats can also include vomiting and seizures.
It's best to keep dogs and cats outside when using recreational marijuana indoors; or place them in another room during puff sessions.
