Difference Between Dogs and Coyotes

by Jenn Smith December 04, 2019

In recent news, a Canadian man hit a "dog" with his car; but quickly moved it to safety. The thing is that the dog he hit wasn't a domestic animal, it was a coyote.

In all fairness to the man, coyotes share similar features to German Shepherds and other medium-sized dogs. But, here are distinct features of coyotes that should be pointed out to homeowners:

The coyote has grayish-brown to yellowish-brown fur on top and whitish fur on its underparts. It has large triangular ears on the top of its head and a long, narrow muzzle. It has a black nose; yellow eyes; and a long, bushy tail. One way to tell the coyote apart from wolves and dogs is to watch its tail when it runs.

Coyotes are spotted throughout the year; but more so in the winter months. This is the time of year when teenage coyotes leave their parents to fend for themselves and search for food. During this time, they will diet on small mammals including pets; birds, rodents, fruits and berries. In April, coyote breeding season begins and more coyotes will populate on lawns and gardens.

Typically, coyotes do not attack humans; but they will if they feel cornered or threatened in some way. They will attack pets, too. It's best to fence out coyotes with a metal fence that is at least 6 feet high.
