Deer Movement In Winter

by Jennifer Smith January 16, 2018

Although growers may not see much from deer in the winter, deer manage to make their way to gardens; but in a different time of day. In the fall, deer stocked up on berries and flowers to get them through winter. White-tailed deer knew going into the colder months that their diet would consist of twigs and leftover, fallen leaves.

To avoid the wind chill and ice, deer will move in after dusk to go undetected by homeowners.

Although deer activity in winter may seem slower, it's just because deer habit has changed. For gardeners that place blankets or sheets over flowerbeds for insulation, it's best to keep watch on plants. Growers are still advised to build deer fence around plants to halt deer movement. This will serve them well in the springtime when deer activity is high due to the [official] growing season.
