Aww, they're cute, right? That is until they decide to learn from their parents and eat everything they see - from your home garden, we might add.
Deer birthing season runs from April through June when doe deer deliver one to three babies into the world. While fawns are adorable, with their white spots and tiny legs, we cannot forget that they will learn from the best to devour plants.
In the morning hours, doe will leave their young in a hidden location away from homeowners and predatory animals. This is the time of day they will scout for food and bring back what they can for fawns in the afternoon.
Homeowners should never approach fawns. In most cases, these babies are not abandoned; and their moms will fight off humans, pets and other animals if they feel their young are in danger. If the fawn is left for too long, call a wildlife removal service, or DNR, for assistance.
Yes, fawns are sweet; but they will soon cause plant damage in the summer like their parents before them. Because spring and summer is when gardeners see double-trouble, it's best to install deer fencing around plants that is at least 7.5' feet tall. Fencing is the best approach for deer management.
