Coyote Management On Landscapes

by Jennifer Smith January 24, 2018

We are hearing more news stories about coyote attacks on dogs; and we, as pet owners, want answers on how to protect dogs from coyotes. For gardeners, they want to know how to protect flowers from coyote damage. So, what can be done for coyote management on properties?

Coyotes may look like dogs, but they are predatory wild animals. The best coyote management strategy is to install a fence that is 5 1/2' feet tall or higher because without one, a coyote can jump 5' feet without touching fences. If you are wondering which is better a plastic fence or a steel fence, it's best to choose a metal fence because coyotes will often dig out and enlarge holes dug by smaller burrowing animals. The use of a metal fence will stop coyotes, but also rabbits and other small critters. (Note: Consider trenching the fence at the bottom to stop burrowing animals such as groundhogs and gophers.)

Coyote damage on landscapes and attacks on pets can be avoided with the use of a fence.
