Farmers Celebrate Canada's Agriculture Day

by Jennifer Smith February 13, 2019

Yesterday on February 12, 2019, Canadian gardeners and farmers rejoiced to celebrate Agriculture Day. Without the hard working men and women farmers in Canada (over 2 million, I might add), we would not be able to enjoy nearly as many crops.

To celebrate one of the largest ag producers in the world, we want to outline some Canada agriculture statistics according to the Government of Canada:

  •  The agriculture and agri-food industry contributes over $110 billion annually to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). (That's more than the national GDP of 2/3 of the world's countries).
  • Agriculture's meaty contributions. There are 10.1 million beef cattle (including bulls, beef cows, heifers, steers and calves) in Canada. In addition, roughly 26 million pigs are raised in Canada each year, making us the world's third-largest exporter of pork products, after the European Union and the United States.

  • Canola - now the oil of choice for millions around the world - was developed by Canadian scientists and planted by Canadian farmers. In 2016, Canada contributed 67% to global canola exports.

  • Canada produces about 75% of the world's maple syrup, we are the world's largest exporter – and one of the largest producers – of flaxseed, canola, pulses, oats and durum wheat.

It's never too late to celebrate! Spread the word about  the importance of agriculture; where food comes from; and the daily job of a farmer in Canada.
