Bunnies Hop Into Gardens In Spring

by Jenn Smith March 11, 2020

Bunnies: Floppy ears, cottontails, and twitchy noses. They are beyond adorable; however, rabbits are the second most complained about wild animals to damage gardens. They are nuisance wildlife that eat all sorts of veggies and will be a major downer in spring. Here's what gardeners need to know:

February is rabbit breeding season; and the gestation period for female rabbits is only 28 days! That means by March, bunnies will be hopping into nearby gardens to get first nibbles on plants - not just carrots. As rabbits grow, they will use their scissor teeth to chew on hard surfaces to trim down teeth which grow at least 5" each year.

To protect home gardens from rabbit damage in spring, growers will need to install a metal fence with PVC that is at least 2-3 feet high. The PVC-coating will protect the steel core from chew marks caused by rabbits as well as weather elements. Trenching the fence into the ground 6-12" will discourage rabbits from burrowing underneath the fence, too.

For rabbit protection in spring, consider installing a PVC-coated hexagonal fence
