White-tailed deer have been waiting for months to eat anything that doesn't resemble a leaf or a twig. They are waiting for gardeners' spring flowers to bud; so, they can get first dibs on the plants. This is why growers need to implement deer management strategies before spring gardening takes flight.
Gardeners need a 7.5' to 8' feet high deer fence for best results. If deer pressure is light, a plastic deer fence will do; but if deer and other critters could be problematic, it's best to go with a PVC-coated metal deer fence to prevent chewing and digging.
Growers can also plant deer-resistant flowers around the deer fence to block the better plants. Deer resistance plants include: iris, verbana, garlic, pepper and other herbs such as thyme and basil. Deer do not like the taste or smell of these plants and will run away after some time.
Gardeners can also use deer repellents with garlic and pepper around gardens; however, the scent will run low after 60 days; hard rains; and snow. Reapplying will be necessary; however repellents to rid deer are great as a secondary use.
It's time to take the necessary precautions to manage gardens and rid deer for good. Start with deer fencing.
