Up until recently, the Lone Star Tick was predominately found in the southeastern part of the United States; but recent news shows that this type of tick species is moving faster throughout parts of the United States.
So far, the Lone Star Tick has been found of parts of New England including New York, New Hampshire and even as far as Minnesota and Ohio. While Michigan residents have not discovered the Lone Star Tick, it may be making its way to the state.
Are there Lone Star Ticks in Canada? Nova Scotia does not have reports of this tick sighting; but does have discoveries of Black-legged Ticks, the most common carriers of Lyme Disease. This includes Ontario. No other provinces show signs of Lone Star Ticks just yet.
But, this tick species is heading northbound and may be in Canada quite soon.
Lone Star Ticks make people break out in hives and sweating; however, what people are most upset about is that they may have sudden red meat allergies.
To reduce the chance of tick bites, be sure to wear long-sleeved clothes while outside in the garden or along hiking trails; spray clothes with insect repellents containing DEET and keep deer out of yards with deer fencing. After all, deer are the number one carriers of ticks and the use of a deer fence can reduce the chance of a tick bite to people and pets by 97 percent.
