106 Reindeer Hit By Trains In Norway

by Jennifer Smith November 27, 2017

Don't worry kids, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer wasn't in this deer herd.

In just four days, reindeer were struck dead by trains in the Norway town of Kvalforsbrua, killing a total of 106 deer. Train operators declare that they did not receive warning from railway bosses to slow down until it was too late.

"Torstein Appfjell, who has looked after reindeer since he was a boy, was at the scene on Saturday and said it was a catastrophe for people looking after the animals and the wider community." (Daily Mail UK)

Deer owners throughout the world mourned the loss of these deer. In Norway, deer are welcomed like pets. In fact, many of the deer struck carried GPS transmitters which told some owners that they were approaching the tracks.

This why Department of Transportation Committees need deer and elk fencing at train stations, highways and airports. Deer Fences stop deer and other wildlife from getting hit by motor vehicles and are proven to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents.
